Violin, Viola Playing Tip #11

The bow hand presents basic challenges to the beginner, starting with the orientation of the hand to the bow. The optimal hand position Is one where there is sufficient mobility in the hand hand that the weight of the bow is felt in the index finger at the tip, shifting to balancing with the pinky at the frog. It is important to differentiate between a feeling of grabbing and binding the hand a certain way, vs. the natural kind of feelings when the fingers simply dangle from he hand, much like the hairs so a paint brush, when held upright.
